DHŪMRA is a research-led manufacturing initiative dedicated to the revival, standardization, and responsible contemporary adaptation of Dhoopa and Dhoopana traditions described across Ayurvedic knowledge systems. The project is built on the recognition that fumigation in Ayurveda was not limited to fragrance or ritual atmosphere, but formed part of a broader procedural domain involving environmental protection, supportive clinical use, space-specific application, and human wellbeing.
Our work focuses on classically curated fumigation formulations developed through textual study, ingredient scrutiny, practical adaptation, and manufacturing discipline. The aim is not to romanticize smoke, nor to flatten all traditional practices into one modern product category, but to carefully recover a neglected therapeutic and environmental tradition and reintroduce it in forms that are meaningful, safer, more consistent, and relevant to present-day life.
AIRVEDA has established a manufacturing setup designed to produce focused fumigation systems inspired by classical principles and adapted for modern use in domains of human wellbeing, environmental care, and procedure-supportive application.

The development of a project like AIRVEDA is not straightforward. The difficulty begins at the level of knowledge itself.
Classical Dhoopana references are distributed across texts, chapters, indications, and procedural contexts. Many are context-specific rather than product-specific. Some are named formulations, while others are instruction-based or embedded within broader therapeutic procedures. Terminology varies, synonyms overlap, and direct one-to-one translation into contemporary commercial categories is often misleading.
The second challenge is formulation complexity. Traditional fumigation mixtures may contain resins, woods, herbs, aromatic substances, fats, mineral adjuncts, and in some cases animal-origin materials that raise ethical, regulatory, or practical concerns today. Not every classical composition is suitable for direct modern reproduction. Selection, exclusion, reformulation boundaries, and contextual integrity all require careful judgment.
Manufacturing presents another layer of difficulty. Unlike many orally administered products, fumigation formulations involve combustion behavior, volatile release, smoke density, burn rate, odor profile, moisture sensitivity, and room-dependent exposure variability. Standardizing such variables is far more difficult than preparing a powder or tablet. Small shifts in raw material quality, particle size, binding medium, humidity, or storage can significantly alter user experience and exposure profile.
A further challenge lies in perception. In the modern landscape, products associated with smoke are often categorized either as ritual commodities or as lifestyle aroma products. That framing makes it difficult to communicate a serious classically grounded, health-sensitive, and manufacturing-disciplined project without either overclaiming or being misunderstood.
The project also faces practical adoption barriers: urban infrastructure, ventilation constraints, user sensitivity to smoke, lack of clinical SOPs, absence of device-based delivery systems, and uncertainty regarding how different product intensities should be matched to different spaces and use contexts.
For these reasons, AIRVEDA has had to be built not merely as a product initiative, but as a layered platform combining textual study, formulation curation, manufacturing design, safety thinking, and long-term translational vision.
The core objectives of AIRVEDA are:
1. To revive a neglected procedural branch of Ayurveda
To bring Dhoopana back into serious discussion as a structured domain of Ayurvedic application rather than leaving it fragmented between ritual, folklore, and unstandardized household practice.
2. To curate formulations from classical foundations
To identify, study, classify, and adapt Dhoopa-related references from Ayurvedic literature and associated traditional knowledge systems with attention to context, indication, and formulation diversity.
3. To establish manufacturing-ready standardization pathways
To convert selected classically grounded formulations into reproducible products through raw material control, processing discipline, batch consistency, and suitable dosage-form design.
4. To create focused products for human wellbeing and supportive use
To develop fumigation systems directed toward environmental care, space use, and focused wellbeing applications, while maintaining clear boundaries between cultural use, wellness use, and medically sensitive use.
5. To improve usability in modern settings
To address the real barriers that limit present-day adoption, including smoke handling, convenience, storage, standardization, dosage uncertainty, and lack of ready-to-use formats.
6. To support future research and validation
To create a base platform from which analytical studies, safety studies, use-case research, and context-specific evaluation can be conducted more rigorously.
7. To build an internationally understandable framework
To present this knowledge in a form that can be meaningfully understood across Ayurveda, integrative medicine, environmental health, product design, and traditional-medicine policy spaces.
AIRVEDA has successfully established a dedicated manufacturing setup for the production of classically curated and focused Dhoopa-based formulations intended for medical and human wellbeing-oriented applications. This marks an important shift from concept-level exploration to execution-ready infrastructure.
The project has resulted in the creation of a formulation development pathway rooted in classical principles while being attentive to modern manufacturing realities. Instead of treating all Dhoopa as one undifferentiated category, the initiative has enabled the development of specialized formulations designed around purpose, experience, and use-context.
A major outcome has been the transformation of a historically dispersed and underutilized knowledge area into a structured manufacturing domain. This includes the identification of usable formulation pathways, the exclusion of impractical or unsuitable components where necessary, and the preparation of systems that can support future standardization, controlled testing, and broader institutional engagement.
The project has also helped reposition Dhoopana from the margins of casual wellness language toward a more serious framework of classical procedural knowledge, environmental use, and applied human wellbeing. In doing so, it creates a foundation for future work in product refinement, evidence generation, device integration, educational dissemination, and policy-facing dialogue.
Most importantly, AIRVEDA demonstrates that traditional fumigation knowledge need not remain confined to textual admiration or symbolic use. With disciplined interpretation and thoughtful manufacturing, it can be re-examined, responsibly adapted, and reintroduced as a meaningful contemporary category.
